Japanese Scientists Discover Tooth Regrowth

Japanese scientists may be closer than ever to transforming dentistry. A research team led by Dr. Katsu Takahashi at Kitano Hospital has found that blocking a protein called USAG-1 can awaken dormant “third set” tooth buds — allowing the body to regrow new teeth.

In animal trials, mice given the treatment developed brand-new teeth, proving what once seemed impossible: that humans may be able to regenerate teeth naturally. Inspired by animals like sharks and elephants, the team is now moving forward with human clinical trials.

If the trials succeed, this breakthrough could eliminate the need for dentures and implants by 2030, restoring natural smiles and reshaping the future of dental care.
